Discover Inkie's Smokehouse

Tucked away near Golitha Falls Drayness Bridge Liskeard, Draynes, Liskeard PL14 6RX, United Kingdom, Inkie's Smokehouse feels like one of those places you’re almost tempted to keep secret. I first stopped by after a long countryside walk through the nearby woodland trails, drawn in by the unmistakable aroma of slow-smoked meat drifting through the air. By the time I left, I understood why locals talk about it with a mix of pride and hunger.

The setting alone is worth mentioning. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Cornwall, the smokehouse blends rustic charm with a relaxed diner atmosphere. Wooden benches, warm lighting, and the steady hum of conversation create a welcoming space that feels both casual and carefully thought out. It’s the kind of location where muddy boots are welcome after a riverside stroll, yet the food presentation would hold its own in a city restaurant.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where this place truly shines. The focus is classic American-style barbecue-brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and smoked chicken-prepared using low-and-slow cooking methods. Smoking meat isn’t just about flavor; it’s a science. According to the Food Standards Agency in the UK, maintaining controlled temperatures during smoking is essential for both taste and food safety. Here, you can taste that precision. The brisket I ordered had that perfect bark on the outside while staying tender and juicy inside, a clear sign it had been smoked for hours at a consistent temperature.

A real standout was the pulled pork sandwich, served with house-made slaw and a soft brioche bun. The balance between smoky richness and fresh crunch showed real attention to detail. When I asked about their preparation process, the staff explained that they season the pork overnight with a dry rub before placing it in the smoker early in the morning. That kind of dedication isn’t rushed, and you can tell. It’s a method many pitmasters swear by, including barbecue experts featured by organizations like the Kansas City Barbeque Society, which emphasizes patience and wood selection as keys to authentic flavor.

Sides aren’t an afterthought either. The mac and cheese was creamy without being heavy, and the baked beans carried a subtle sweetness that complemented the savory meats. Even the sauces deserve a mention-ranging from tangy vinegar-based blends to thicker, molasses-rich varieties. Instead of overpowering the meat, they enhance it. That restraint shows confidence in the product itself.

Customer reviews often highlight the friendly service, and I can back that up. During my visit, the staff took time to recommend pairings and explain portion sizes honestly. There’s transparency here-you know what you’re getting, and it matches expectations. Pricing feels fair considering the quality and portion sizes, especially given the rural location where sourcing fresh ingredients can sometimes be challenging.

One practical note: because it’s located near Golitha Falls, weekends and holiday periods can get busy. Parking is available, but arriving a bit earlier than peak lunch hours makes for a more relaxed experience. It’s always wise to check opening times in advance, as smaller independent smokehouses occasionally adjust hours seasonally.

What really sets this place apart is consistency. Barbecue can be unpredictable; slight variations in wood, humidity, or cooking time can change the final result. Yet on repeat visits, the quality has remained steady. That reliability builds trust. When a restaurant can deliver the same depth of flavor again and again, it shows skill and discipline behind the scenes.

Beyond the food, there’s a sense of community. Families, hikers, and road-trippers gather here, sharing tables and stories over trays of smoked ribs and golden fries. It doesn’t feel manufactured or overly polished. Instead, it feels genuine-like a smokehouse should.

For anyone exploring Liskeard or the surrounding Cornish countryside, adding this spot to your list makes perfect sense. Great barbecue isn’t just about smoke and seasoning; it’s about time, care, and respect for ingredients. Here, those elements come together naturally, creating a dining experience that feels both hearty and heartfelt.

  • This place offers American style smoke House food, Ribs, Wings, Burgers, Mac & cheese, chilli dog. We had the pulled pig wrap, Chilli Dog & Mac & beans and our group had nothing bad to say about it. Portion sizes are very generous. Lots of people asking for takeaway pots for left overs. Chocolate brownie was enjoyed by a child and some taken home too. Only thing I'd recommend is some modern country music to add to the atmosphere. We loved how unexpected this place was right next to a beautiful scenic walk.

  • Great place to eat, especially after a walk through Golitha Falls Nature Reserve. Good selection on the menu, friendly staff and plenty of seating. It's always been busy when we have been there, even on a weekday.

  • Very tasty food. I recommend the Dirty Dog, which is a hot Dog with loads of pulled pork and delicious coleslaw on the side. We got there a bit early to ensure we got a parking space. The car park does get full pretty quickly and people start parking up the road, which can be a nightmare. The Golitha Falls walk is really nice and worth checking out. We will defo be going back again to Inkies.

  • I have visited Inkies for years. Has been about 9 months since I last went there. Service impeccable as it always has been. Ordered the food & within 8 minutes it was at the table. Delicious & full of flavour....my only niggle is the portion sizes aren't great. Id of hope for a little more for my £. Cannot fault the quality though or amazing staff

  • Went to Golitha Falls & stumbled on Inkies when entering the car park. Decided we would come back. Arrived at 12ish, staff were superb, the venue humble but full of character & the food so tasty - unique is a big word but in a rural car park near Liskeard I think we found that unique combination!

  • The best brunch I've ever had, next to one of the most beautiful woodland walks in the country; Golitha Falls. There's a huge carpark that they provide for walkers on the suggestion you get a drink or something grub (you'd be mad not to) but even this can fill at peak times so time it carefully. We hit it around 9 and only met a few other parties on our walk but by 1130 it was hectic. I will be back for lunch or dinner next time I'm in the area to have meats from the smoker. All the staff were relaxed and cheerful, gave good chat. Their moonshine is absolutely knock out.

  • Really nice food, fab service, super quick, and friendly. Great value for money. A great stop before or after visiting the local waterfalls. I had the belly pork and it was divine. Highly recommend.
